FAQ
6. Why Have I Never Heard Of This Food Source Before?
Since the beginning of recorded human history hemp has been one of the world's most widely used natural resources, but in 1936 the U.S government introduced the Marijuana Tax Act which made it impossible for hemp farmers to make a living. Industrial hemp is NOT Marijuana! Industrial hemp is made from a plant called Cannabis Sativa; Marijuana is made from Cannabis Rasta, Cannabis Indica or Cannabis Ruderalis. Hulled Cannabis Sativa seeds do not contain THC resin. The Cannabis Sativa plant cannot get you stoned or high. Hemp and marijuana are distant cousins but because they have similar physical properties, corporate influences were able to launch a successful fear campaign, in which the two cousins were forever linked. Hemp's association with marijuana was firmly planted in people's minds through years of propaganda, backed by corporate lobby groups, and perpetuated by the Hearst media empire; who just so happened to have a major stake in the pulp and paper industry. It was not possible to hold a patent on hemp, and corporate America knew that hemp could undermine the value of many of its industrial patents and pharmaceutical drugs. Plus it was the single largest threat to the pulp and paper industry because hemp grows nine times faster than any tree and can easily be made into paper. As a result of this massive corporate pressure the hemp industry was successfully destroyed.
In 1996, after 60 years, the Canadian government was the first to lift the ban on industrial hemp. Only in the last couple of years have Canadian farmers been permitted to grow hemp in quantity large enough to produce an economical food source. Today the sale and consumption of hemp seed is now fully endorsed by both Health Canada and the USFDA. The recent marijuana activists have again hijacked industrial hemp and are now using it in their campaign to legalize marijuana. This only damages and reinforces peoples misconceptions and helps government and corporate lobby groups keep hemp out of American industry. If corporate America would have been unsuccessful in their campaign against industrial hemp the world would be a far greener place.
A complete history of hemp is found on this website and we encourage everyone to take the time to read it.
